Thinking about our Great Wide World

I’m back from an incredible trip to the Peoples Republic of China. Or, really, I should say, from visiting two big cities in two different Chinese provinces. (It’s a big place, I know. Well, Boise may not be Chicago, but you sure know you’re in the U.S. either way…) What can I tell you? Get on the plane. If China has not been on your list, put it on. At the top. Particularly if you’re young and wondering what role you want to play in this global community. Particularly if you want to plug into the future. My god, what a young-feeling country! The damn nicest people. Easy to get around once you get the hang of things–which for an old dog like me is saying something (that’s the subway in the photo). If you’re a student, this is where you want to do your semester abroad. Lord knows, it’s a complicated place. But isn’t that the juice of this global village we live in? It’s the most incredible mash-up of ancient and future, of the coolest stuff from the rest of the world filtered through/flavored with Chinese tradition. I’m telling you: go go go.
