Not Even a Late Bloomer, a Late Budder…

Thinking about Writing

I saw this book cover advertised in something. Maybe the New York Review of Books. First of all, please do see Richter’s paintings if you haven’t. They’re amazing. But it’s not the paintings I’m thinking about. It’s the small print on the cover above that caught my eye: “Early Work.” Teeny-tiny type in a teeny-tiny little ad, but it might as well have been a billboard the way it caught my attention. Because the work that I’m doing now, the writing, this is my early work. And, ladies and gentlemen, I am no spring chicken. Nope. Kind of a late-autumn-heading-into-winter chicken at this point. And yet, I feel I’m just beginning. Will I look back (what, maybe five long years from now?) and laugh at or wince or deny this, my Early Work? Will I have time to get better? Will I have a Middle Period? A Late? Or just a Too Late? Sigh.
